A Blockchain Solution for Authenticating Physical Artwork
Thought
A musing on the intersection of art authentication, blockchain technology and the preservation of provenance.
Note
A blockchain protocol to authenticate and track the provenance of physical artwork.
Analysis
Blockchain technology offers a secure and immutable ledger that could offer a solution to the longstanding issue of counterfeit art and the documentation of provenance. This note proposes utilizing blockchain for recording and verifying the authenticity of physical artworks, providing a decentralized and tamper-proof record.
The analysis must consider the need for a physical-to-digital bridge - typically, a digital certificate or a cryptographic seal applied to the artwork, possibly using advanced materials that interact with blockchain-based systems. Each artwork would have a unique token on the blockchain, representing its identity and ownership history.
To fit within Arthur Koestler's concept of bisociation where two unrelated matrices of thought are brought together, this idea combines the traditional art world with modern blockchain technology to create a novel solution to an age-old problem. The intersecting matries are blockchain's logical, mathematical structure and the subjective, cultural value system inherent within the art world.
