Thought

An introspection on how the birth and cultivation of new neurons, known as neurogenesis, might model an innovative process in entrepreneurship.

Note

Neurogenesis is an entrepreneurial process within the brain.

Analysis

Neurogenesis, the formation of new neurons in the brain, is analogous to spawning new ideas and ventures in business. Just as the brain environment must be conducive to the survival and integration of new neurons, the business ecosystem must support the inception and growth of new ventures.

Neuroscientists have identified factors that promote neurogenesis—such as exercise, learning, and reduced stress—which mirror entrepreneurial actions like cultivating a healthy business culture, lifelong learning, and stress management for creativity and productivity.

Bisociation, as defined by Arthur Koestler in “The Act of Creation,” is the connection of two unrelated ideas or planes of thought. The concept of neurogenesis can bisociate with entrepreneurship, as both processes involve the generation of new entities (neurons or businesses) that must integrate into a larger, pre-existing system.

Entrepreneurs can learn from neurogenesis by cultivating an environment where new ideas can survive and integrate effectively. Identifying the entrepreneurial equivalents of neurotrophic factors—the substances that promote neuron growth and health—could enhance business innovation.
